MODA
Museum of Design
Primal Screen handled all of MODA's digital signage from its inception, working with architecture firm Perkins+Will to design interactive signage into the museum space from the start.
In addition to handling development, ops, and infrastructure for this from the time I was hired, I also developed multiple custom interactive experiences for special exhibits, and continued to lead and direct their maintenance and updates as Technical Director.
Signage
MODA has multiple touchscreen displays provding information on current exhibits and general information, as well as a multi-screen video display in the front lobby.
My initial work for them involved taking the outdated, flash-based display app, and building a modern Electron based app. I was routinely onsite during new hardware installations and troubleshooting after network infrastructure updates. This also included setting up server infrastructure for application auto updates, to allow for easy updates that would reliably run offline. Later I directed the development of updates that would update a local database from multiple online sources to drive content instead.
The video wall got an update with higher resolution screens around the same time, and required setting up a pipeline for H.265 video encoding in the early days of its release to ensure good performance and efficient file sizes.
Exploded Guitars
application walking through exploded views of multiple historic guitar designs. This involved working closely with designers to render videos with transitions in and out of specific views, allowing for high fidelity renders with interactive control. I handled the video encoding pipeline to ensure high keyframe density, necessary for seeking to arbitrary points without digital artifacting. Information touchpoints were layered over this, and everything was bundled into a self contained electron app. This was later released as a web version for visitors to view outside of the museum. The system for this project was also used as a foundation for multiple future client projects.
Text Me
The Text Me show included an entire gallery wall that Primal Screen was free to utilize for an interactive installation. This was displayed alongside work by more than 60 artists, including Neil Gaiman, Paula Scher, Stefan Sagmeister, Milton Glaser, and Shepard Fairey.
I developed a Unity application with a Kinect camera to handle body tracking of guests. Four projectors displayed a literal wall of text, and guests could interact by flinging additional ribbons of text across the entire stretch of wall with their hands.
